What is Emetophobia?

Emetophobia is an extreme fear of vomiting which can cause you to spend excessive time trying to prevent becoming sick. It can be a truly disabling condition that effects every area of your life. The risk of vomiting feels very real and unescapable. This fear normally come with a constant feeling of nausea.

Common symptoms include:

  • Anxiety.

  • Fear.

  • Nausea.

  • Panic attacks.

  • Being on edge.

You may try and cope by:

  • Avoiding triggers.

  • Excessively worrying.

  • Overplanning.

  • Body scanning for signs of illness.

  • Excessively cleaning or disinfecting.

  • Reassurance seeking.

  • Avoiding certain foods, cooking methods or places.

Is Emetophobia treatable?

Yes. Emetophobia is highly treatable.

You may have lived with it for years and tried countless ways to control or fix it, but that doesn't mean you're stuck with it forever. Therapy can give you a structured way of understanding what is keeping your fear going and then work step by step to change your fear.

What is the best treatment?

The therapy that has been proven to be highly effective for the treatment of emetophobia right now is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT for short). CBT is a type of therapy which states that the thoughts that go through our mind are really important because they influence how we feel and how we act. Often our thoughts feelings and actions can create a vicious cycle which only grows our phobia over time.

Everyone with emetophobia will have similar but different vicious cycle specific to them. Once you work out your own specific cycles, it becomes much easier to break you out of it and for you to overcome your fear..

What can therapy do for you

Therapy isn't just about making you feel less anxious. It's about helping you stop organising your life around the fear of vomiting. Therapy aims to give you your life back.

The real goal is to spent less time managing your emetophobia and spend more time living your life.

Therapy can help you stop worrying when eating, go places without anxiety holding you back and stop monitoring your nausea. It can help you accept uncertainty, feel more confident and start claiming the life emetophobia has taken or stopped you achieving.

How CBT breaks you out of this cycle: Your roadmap to recovery.

A step-by-step approach

CBT is not about positive thinking or forcing yourself to stop being afraid of vomiting overnight. Instead, it works by helping you understand what is keeping your emetophobia going and then making changers were it matters the most.

You will learn to respond differently to thoughts, feelings and uncertainty, reduce the behaviours that keep your fear alive, and gradually face the things you’ve been avoiding to build up your confidence and reclaim your life.

The aim isn’t to give you complete certainty that you’ll never be sick. It’s to help you feel confident that you can cope regardless of whatever happens.

Why with me?

One of the biggest complains that those with Emetophobia have is that when they have tried to reach out for support in the past, they find that their struggles are not fully understood, their experiences are not validated, and that the standard treatments often fall short of what they needed. Sadly this is all to common. Many therapist don’t know how to treat Emetophobia.

However, I have spent my career trying to change this. Emetophobia is something I specialise in. I have written a textbook and run training sessions for therapists on how to successfully treat it.

If you decide to speak to me, you will get someone who really understands what you are going through. You will feel heard and understood. Together we will go through treatment as a team to get you better. Recovery is possible.

I am highly rated and recommended by the clients I see.
