Online therapy for Emetophobia

I believe that everyone can recover from Emetophobia

My name is David Kaneria and I am a Cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT). I specialise in treating Emetophobia and helping you get your life back.

Emetophobia (the fear of vomiting) is an awful condition to have. It is not just about being sick, it creeps into every area of your life. Without treatment, emetophobia typically never goes away on its own.

But it is highly treatable. Everyone can recover with the right support.

About me:

Thank you for visiting my website. If you are here I am guessing you are struggling with Emetophobia. You are probably feeling anxious, scared and exhausted. You may also have other feelings such as guilt, regret, low, anger, embarrassment or a mixture of different emotions. Although I have never had emetophobia, from a young age, I too have felt all of these emotions. I had depression and anxiety when I was younger and at that time I felt helpless and had no one to help me through it. But I am here to make sure you are not alone.

I will be here to support you through your journey to feel better. From the very beginning of therapy by helping you understand your problem, to treatment and then to setting you up to avoid any relapses.

What got me into treating Emetophobia:

My interest in treating emetophobia began with my own experiences. As a teenager, I struggled with an eating disorder which meant that I viewed vomiting in a very different light, as something almost positive. Thankfully, I fully recovered.

Like so many, I was unaware that emetophobia even existed. It was during my therapy training that I first heard about Emetophobia and I was immediately fascinated as it was the opposite of how I saw it growing up. The training we got on Emetophobia was not good enough. It was just two PowerPoint slides, an article and a warning that treating Emetophobia was challenging, best left until I was fully qualified.

I did not like that advice and started to actively seek out clients with Emetophobia, determined to learn as much as I could. The more I learned, the more passionate I became about it. This eventually led me to write a textbook, aiming to teaching other therapists.

The thing that made me want to treat it, was witnessing and hearing the personal stories of how Emetophobia was stopping people really living. It was infiltrating every aspect of their lives, leaving them scared, hopeless and constantly on edge. I discovered that Emetophobia can easily and successfully treated. I loved helping people finally reclaim their lives overcome this fear.

One of my favourite things is when I get an email from an ex-clients in recovery, updating me on how they have experienced a situation that would have highly triggered them in the past, but how they did not feel afraid.

Accredited CBT therapist:

It can be hard to find a good therapist for emetophobia. This is made harder by the fact that legally anyone in the UK can call themselves a CBT therapist without needing any qualifications. This means you could be charged for really expensive sessions with someone who does not have the expertise, knowledge or experience that you really need. If you are looking for a real CBT therapist like myself, make sure they are accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). This means they have completed CBT training at a university level, had real hands on experience, undergo yearly top up training and agree to work within a strong ethical framework to put you, the client first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime. If you’re feeling ready, go ahead and book in your first session.

  • Everyone’s phobia is slightly different. Due to this I build a personalised treatment plan around you as a person. This therapy is designed to help you completely understand why you have this phobia and how to overcome it in the quickest way possible.

     How it works:

    I offer a six-stage plan for recovery.

    • Stage 1: At the start of therapy, we need to understand you thought processes and viewpoints about sickness, nausea, anxiety and uncertainty.

    • Stage 2: We will then explore how your actions to avoid being sick may be well intentions but how they are potentially making the phobia worse.

    • Stage 3: We will then try and reframe the problem and set the stage for meaningful change in therapy.

    • Stage 4: We will then explore the tools needed to drop any unhelpful behaviours. This is the largest and most effective stage of therapy.

    • Stage 5: We will then start building up your confidence in safely facing your fears. Don’t worry, this is always done at your pace and in a way that makes it manageable.

    • Stage 6: The last step in recovery is truly accepting that vomiting is safe even though it is an unpleasant experience.

     Who is it for:

    • This therapy is suitable for both adults and children with emetophobia over the age of 10.

    • This is an active therapy. So, it is only suitable for those willing to put in the effort to change.

To discuss suitability, book an initial consultation.

  • Many CBT therapists in the UK are trained by the NHS. When I did this training, emetophobia was only given a handful of slides on a PowerPoint lecture. This means that most qualified therapists only know the bare minimum on treating emetophobia.

Unlike most therapists, I have dedicated my life to fully understanding emetophobia and treating it. You will get someone who truly understands what you are going through, and a therapist who can tailor the therapy around you and your specific problems.

    • Sessions are £70 a session.

    • You can pay online at the time of booking using my secure online booking system.

    • A minimum of 24 hours’ notice must be given for cancellations, otherwise the session fee will be charged.

    • I have chosen not to work with insurance companies and will only accept self-funding clients.

  • The first CBT therapy session will be an assessment where we will spend some time getting to know each other.

I aim to better understand your life history and symptoms to try to understand your the main problem areas and your goals for treatment.

If CBT feels right for you, we can then agree a treatment plan together.
